The RC76 Capstan Rope & Cord Grips use a combination of frictional force and mechanical clamping to securely hold flexible specimens during tensile testing. The capstan design distributes tensile loads over a larger contact area, reducing stress concentrations and minimizing premature specimen failure near the clamping jaws.

Principles of Operation

  1. Position the Specimen: Place the rope, cord, yarn, or wire around the cylindrical capstan.

  2. Wrap Around the Capstan: Depending on the material’s friction characteristics, wrap the specimen one or more times around the capstan to provide sufficient frictional resistance.

  3. Secure the Free End: Insert the free end of the specimen between the clamping jaws and tighten them using the manual or pneumatic mechanism.

  4. Repeat at the Opposite Grip: Secure the other end of the specimen in the second capstan grip, maintaining the required gauge length.

  5. Apply Tensile Load: As the testing machine applies tension, friction between the specimen and capstan gradually transfers the load, reducing the force concentrated at the clamping jaws.

This gripping method helps prevent slippage, minimizes specimen damage, and promotes more reliable tensile strength and elongation measurements.
