Their adjustable spherical seating allows the platen to align with the specimen surface, promoting uniform load distribution and minimizing bending stresses caused by misalignment.

Principle of Operation

During compression testing, a specimen is positioned between two opposing compression platens. As the testing machine applies compressive force, the platens transfer the load to the specimen.

The spherical seating allows the platen face to tilt relative to the loading axis, compensating for minor misalignment between the specimen surfaces and the testing machine. This helps establish parallel contact, distribute the compressive force more evenly, and reduce unintended bending or localized stress concentrations.

Once the desired alignment is achieved, four fixing nuts can be tightened to lock the platen at the selected angle. This prevents further angular movement during testing and maintains a stable loading surface throughout the compression test.

Applications

Spherically seated compression platens are suitable for a variety of compression testing applications, including:

Compression strength testing: Determining the maximum compressive load a material can withstand before failure.

Compression modulus testing: Evaluating material stiffness under compressive loading.

Compression yield testing: Identifying the point at which a material begins to deform plastically under compression.

Rigid material testing: Testing metals, plastics, composites, and other rigid specimens where proper platen alignment is essential.

Specimens with minor surface irregularities: Accommodating small deviations in specimen parallelism to improve contact and load distribution.

Spherically seated compression platens are designed for precise alignment and uniform load distribution during compression testing.
